Overview

Phandeeyar (“creation place”) is an innovation lab that is spearheading the use of technology to accelerate change and development in Myanmar. Phandeeyar invests in local technology startups, trains new entrepreneurs and builds the pool of tech talent. Phandeeyar also helps civic and social entrepreneurs, CSOs and independent media use technology to increase their impact and runs a co-working space out of its 10,000 square foot space located in the heart of downtown Yangon. Including Digital Rights Forum, StartUp Challenge and Accelerator Program, Phandeeyar hosted 251 events total in 2017 with more than 4,000 attendees.

The Role

Phandeeyar is looking for a talented professional to serve as its Data Community Coordinator. You will take a lead role in growing the open data movement in Myanmar. You will build and maintain relationships with organizations that collect and publish data, and develop ways to communicate publicly available data in Myanmar to a broad audience. You will also develop other programs to help improve the capacity of local organizations to analyze data and communicate using data. Overall, you will be responsible for developing resource for open data in Myanmar for journalists, researchers, civil society organization, businesses, and the general public.This role is a great path to becoming a thought leader around data/civic tech in Myanmar.

Key responsibilities include:

    Developing partnerships

  • ● Taking a leading role in growing and building Open data community and foster the technology ecosystem for social good
  • ● Connecting and networking with CSOs, NGOs, private and government organizations which collect data
  • ● Promoting the idea of open data to a wide range of groups in Myanmar, ranging from NGOs, CSOs, businesses, and government organizations, to journalists, researchers, and technologists
  • ● Designing, organizing and conducting workshops on open data and data literacy for civil society and media organizations
    Content creation

  • ● Publishing/writing data driven stories about Myanmar in English
  • ● Working collaboratively with the rest of the team to create content that will best communicate the available data to a broad audience
  • ● Assisting in the development and/or localization of resources to support the use and understanding of open data in Myanmar

Essential Requirements

Community builder skills – You are a community builder at heart. You enjoy working with people. You’re curious and great listener. You want to get the community excited about open data to improve the country.

Writing/Research or Editorial experience – You’re a good communicator and are fluent in English. You are able to communicate technical concepts effectively and concisely to non-techies. You are able to write articles in English that appeals to a broad audience.

Project management skills – You are great at getting things done. You’re a self-starter who takes the initiative and can mobilize resources and solve problems. You can juggle multiple projects and you have good attention to detail.

Passionate about technology and data – You don’t need to have a background in quantitative data analysis, but you should be comfortable with numbers and datasets. You are passionate about continually learning new skills in technology, data science and data visualization.

Excited about our mission – We want to work with people who are excited about what we’re doing. You need to be excited about using technology and open data to improve Myanmar.

Bonus skills:

Data analysis, Mapping and Data Visualization skills – Experience with STATA, R or mapping technologies such as GIS, Tableau, etc

Writing and Journalism background

Sectoral experience – It would be highly useful to have experience working in development, social science research, environmental research, and/or investigative journalism. This could be at local or international NGOs, think tanks, market research companies, academic institutions or news media organizations.

The Details

  • Location: This role is based in Yangon. It may involve some travel around the country.
  • Hours: Phandeeyar is itself a start-up. Many of its activities happen outside standard office hours (9am-5pm). You will need to work some evenings and weekends, however there is a “time off in lieu” policy.
  • Remuneration: Will be based on experience and qualifications and will be competitive for the sector.
