Phandeeyar (“creation place”) is a community tech hub that is helping to develop the technology and innovation ecosystem in Myanmar. Our mission is to use technology to accelerate change and development. We bring the tech community together with civil society, independent media, and entrepreneurs to build the apps, tools, and content that Myanmar needs. We have an awesome 10,000 square foot space in the heart of downtown Yangon. We run a coworking space, an event space, and have a busy program of activities. Last year we launched many new exciting initiatives, including a startup accelerator, an open data portal, and a makerspace. This year, we’ve launched a series of exciting new mentoring initiatives for CSOs, journalists, and entrepreneurs and launched a Digital Rights program, focused on mitigating the risks and challenges brought by greater connectivity.

The Role

Phandeeyar is looking for a Digital Security Associate to assist our media and CSO partners in securing their digital practices. Your role will be to help develop resources, and conduct trainings and workshops on digital rights and security.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Raising awareness about digital security risks
  • Providing support to at-risk groups including prevention and emergency assistance
  • Helping to build a community of cyber-security conscious individuals
  • Supporting digital rights activities
  • Supporting other key Phandeeyar initiatives

Essential Requirements

Digital Security  –  You are interested in learning about digital rights and security, and feel strongly about the need to promote and protect such rights. Prior work in digital security or digital rights is highly valued, but not necessary.

Advocacy Skills  – You have previous advocacy or networking experience, and are comfortable working one on one with senior civil society leaders and journalists. You feel passionately about protecting individuals’ and groups’ online privacy and security.

Training Skills  – You’re a talented trainer and capacity builder, able to explain complex concepts in easy terms. You will also be able to develop and run workshops. Prior experience as a workshop trainer would be highly valuable, but not necessary.

Communications  – You’re a good communicator with solid written and spoken Myanmar (required) and good written and spoken English skills.

Organizational Skills  – You’re great at getting things done. You’re a self-starter who takes the initiative, mobilizes resources, solves problems, and can work independently. You can juggle multiple projects and you have good attention to detail.


The Details

Location: This role is based in downtown Yangon. It will involve some travel around the country.

Hours: Phandeeyar is a start-up community tech hub. As such, it does not have standard office hours (9am-5pm). You will often need to work evenings and weekends, however there is a ‘time off in lieu’ policy.

Remuneration: Will be based on experience and qualifications and will be competitive for the sector.
