Phandeeyar (“creation place”) is a community tech hub that is helping to develop the technology and innovation ecosystem in Myanmar. Our mission is to use technology to accelerate change and development. We bring the tech community together with civil society, social enterprises and independent media to build the apps, tools and content that Myanmar needs. We have an awesome 6000 square foot space in the heart of downtown Yangon. We run a coworking area, classrooms and an event space and we have a busy program of activities. Last year we’ve launched many new exciting initiatives, including a startup accelerator and a makerspace. This year, we launched a social media program and a Phandeeyar labs, a civic tech pendant to the accelerator.
Phandeeyar is looking for a passionate Social Impact Associate to engage with its work helping change agents. You will help run technology trainings, develop resources and training materials, and help communicate about the work Phandeeyar does.
Key responsibilities include:
Helping to design and run activities/programs to support the development of the tech eco-system in Myanmar
Helping to design and manage programs to better enable civil society organizations and other communities of individuals passionate about social change to use technology to increase the impact of their work
Helping to build the community of developers and designers who are excited about using technology for civic impact
Helping to develop and execute programs to enable independent media take advantage of the new digital media environment
Helping to design and manage activities such as hackathons, apps competitions and other similar events to bring technology, civil society and independent media together
Supporting other key Phandeeyar initiatives
Organizational skills – You are great at getting things done. You’re a self-starter who takes the initiative and can mobilize resources and solve problems. You can juggle multiple projects and you have good attention to detail.
Great people skills – You’re a people person. You love bringing people together and you have the interpersonal skills to help connect civil society and independent media with the Myanmar tech community.
Communications – You’re a good communicator with solid written and spoken Myanmar and good written and spoken English skills.
Passionate about using technology for social change
Location: This role is based in downtown Yangon. It will involve some travel around the country.
Hours: Phandeeyar is a start-up community tech hub. As such, it does not have standard office hours (9am-5pm). You will often need to work evenings and weekends, however there is a “time off in lieu” policy.
Remuneration: Will be based on experience and qualifications and will be competitive for the sector.
Location: This role is based in downtown Yangon. It may very occasionally involve some travel around the country.
Hours: Phandeeyar working hours are based on a 5½ day workweek, however because of the nature of Phandeeyar working hours will be unusual. Phandeeyar is a community tech hub. It holds lots of events, meetups and workshops, many of which happen in the evenings and on the weekends. Staff will therefore often be expected to work in the evenings and on the weekends. To account for this, time will be given in lieu.
