Phandeeyar (“creation place”) is a community tech hub that is helping to develop the technology and innovation ecosystem in Myanmar. Our mission is to use technology to accelerate change and development. We bring the tech community together with civil society, social enterprises and independent media to build the apps, tools and content that Myanmar needs. We have an awesome 6000 square foot space in the heart of downtown Yangon. We run a coworking area, classrooms and an event space and we have a busy program of activities. Last year we’ve launched many new exciting initiatives, including a startup accelerator and a makerspace. This year, we launched a social media program and a Phandeeyar labs, a civic tech pendant to the accelerator.

The Role

Phandeeyar is looking for a Digital Security Associate to assist our media and CSOs partners in securing their digital processes. Your role will be to help develop resources, run a digital security helpline and conduct workshops.

Key responsibilities include

Raising awareness of digital security risks
Providing support to at risk group – including through prevention and emergency assistance
Helping to build a community of cyber-security conscious individuals
Supporting digital rights activities
Supporting other key Phandeeyar initiatives

Essential Requirements

Digital Security – You will have a demonstrated interest in digital security and a demonstrated understanding of common risks and digital security best practices.
Mentoring skills – You will be great at working one on one with senior civil society leaders and journalists. You know how to deal with people and know how to keep your calm in stressful situations.
Training skills – You’re a talented trainer, able to explain complex concepts in easy terms. You will also be able to develop and run workshops. Prior experience as a workshop trainer would be highly valuable.
Communications – You’re a good communicator with solid written and spoken Myanmar and good written and spoken English skills.
Organizational skills – You are great at getting things done. You’re a self-starter who takes the initiative and can mobilize resources and solve problems. You can juggle multiple projects and you have good attention to detail.

The Details

Location: This role is based in downtown Yangon. It will involve some travel around the country.
Hours: Phandeeyar is a start-up community tech hub. As such, it does not have standard office hours (9am-5pm). You will often need to work evenings and weekends, however there is a “time off in lieu” policy.

Hours: Phandeeyar working hours are based on a 5½ day workweek, however because of the nature of Phandeeyar working hours will be unusual. Phandeeyar is a community tech hub. It holds lots of events, meetups and workshops, many of which happen in the evenings and on the weekends. Staff will therefore often be expected to work in the evenings and on the weekends. To account for this, time will be given in lieu.
