THE OPPORTUNITY

With the opening up of Myanmar, connectivity has exploded. Tens of millions of people are already using smartphones and the country is poised for a digital leapfrog. Phandeeyar has been spearheading the development of Myanmar’s tech and innovation ecosystem since 2014. It is now looking for a gifted leader to take the organization to the next level. If you’re an highly experienced executive with a passion for technology, bringing communities together and unleashing their potential, then this is an unparalleled opportunity to help fundamentally change a country.

THE ROLE

Phandeeyar is looking for an audacious leader with a breadth of skills to match the organization’s ambition. Your job will be to expand Phandeeyar’s role as a driving force for the development of Myanmar’s tech and innovation ecosystem. You will be responsible for further developing Phandeeyar’s vision for how technology could be used to accelerate change and development in Myanmar and growing our programs to advance this vision.

You will expand the pool of tech talent and support the growth and success of Myanmar startups, as well as the innovative use of technology for social and civic good. Under your leadership, you’ll enhance Phandeeyar’s place in the community as a tech hub that is open and supportive to all who are using technology to move the country forward.

You will be the public face of innovation in Myanmar. You will build support within the country and the region for Myanmar’s digital leapfrog and will mobilize resources to make it happen. You will forge strategic partnerships – with investors, companies, government, civil society and media – to enable Phandeeyar to scale its impact. You’ll also raise the money for Phandeeyar to pursue its objectives, as well as develop the organization’s business model and long-term sustainability plan.

You will lead a talented team that is currently 30 strong and slated to increase to 50 within 12 months. You will help expand the team’s skills and further develop its culture to enable it to execute the organization’s strategic plan. You will report directly to Phandeeyar’s Board.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

VISION – You do not need to be a technologist or have technical skills (bonus if you do!), but you do need to be familiar with the major trends and developments in technology. More importantly, you need to have a vision for how technology could help Myanmar perform a “digital leapfrog” and you need to be able to develop programs that will help fulfil this vision.

LEADERSHIP – Phandeeyar’s rapidly growing team is already 30 strong and running eight major programs. You need to be a very strong leader who is capable of getting the best out of an experienced board and management team, further building and developing the team and culture, overseeing all financial management and reporting, all the while keeping the organization firmly focused on its strategic goals.

COMMUNICATIONS – You will be the public face of tech and innovation in Myanmar. You need to be highly skilled communicator who is as persuasive on a stage in front of hundreds as you in are in front of a TV camera or in a one-on-one meeting. You’ll also need excellent written skills.Bonus: If you are as good communicating in the Myanmar language as you are in English.

PEOPLE SKILLS – You’re an awesome people person who is as comfortable dealing with a venture capitalist as you are with a student activist. You’re great at establishing rapport, building relationships, inspiring action and you’re passionate about bringing people together and building a big diverse community.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT – You’re gifted at identifying opportunities, crafting a pitch and closing a deal. Experience raising money (from investors and/or donors) or developing partnerships or managing sales is a must.

FRONTIER MARKETS – You know how to get things done in places where it’s tough to get things done. Ideally, you will have lived and worked in Myanmar, or at the very least, a country at a similar stage of development.

PASSION – This is not just another job. Phandeeyar is a mission-driven organization. You must be passionate about building the country’s tech and innovation ecosystem to accelerate change and development in Myanmar.

ABOUT PHANDEEYAR

Phandeeyar (“creation place”) is an innovation lab that is spearheading the development of Myanmar’s tech ecosystem. Phandeeyar invests in local technology startups, trains new entrepreneurs and builds the pool of tech talent. Phandeeyar also helps civic and social entrepreneurs, CSOs and independent media use technology to increase their impact and runs a co-working space out of its 6000 square foot space located in the heart of downtown Yangon.

Phandeeyar was born out of Code for Change Myanmar, a series of hackathons in 2014 that highlighted the potential of Myanmar’s connectivity revolution. In 2015, thousands of people participated in Phandeeyar’s more than 100 events, which included a startup competition and three hackathons. In 2016, Phandeeyar launched Myanmar’s first-ever tech startup Accelerator, the Yangon chapter of Founder Institute, Silicon Valley’s most successful entrepreneur development program, a Makerspace for the country’s hardware hackers, and an open data platform: OpenDevelopmentMyanmar.net.
